治療失智症患者的藥物研究又有新進展，英國萊斯特大學（University of Leicester）發現一種化學物質，能防止老鼠腦細胞死亡，據悉這是歷來首度發現藥物能延緩動物的神經退化疾病，若擴充研究，未來可望研發出治療人類神經退化，如阿滋海默症、巴金森氏症、亨丁頓舞蹈症等神經退化疾病等用藥。
罹患失智症的人口逐年增加，根據國際失智症協會的調查，2010年底，全球大約有3,600萬人口被診斷為失智症，且病患人數正急速增加中，估計到 2030 年將達到 6,600 萬人，2050 年將達到 11,500 萬人，對社會家庭造成不小的負擔。
研究領導者為瑪露奇（Giovanna Mallucci）教授，她帶領團隊用罹患普利昂蛋白（prion）疾病的老鼠做實驗，普利昂蛋白是一類僅由蛋白質構成的可自我複製並具感染性的因子，罹患此疾病的人或動物，體內變性蛋白質（普利昂蛋白）會快速增加，當細胞察覺到不對勁，產生了防衛反應，會將合成蛋白質的機制暫時關掉，但若關閉的時間太久，細胞會因重要的蛋白質缺少，最終「餓死」。
為了干擾這種細胞自然防衛機制，研究團隊以葛蘭素史克藥廠研發的藥物 GSK2606414 治療老鼠，結果發現老鼠並未出現腦細胞死亡的狀況。此發現已發表於《轉譯醫學》期刊，其他學者認為這是治療神經退化疾病的轉捩點，但由於此藥物會產生嚴重的副作用，未來仍須更多實驗，才能應用再治療人類失智症等疾病上。
