家中有嬰幼兒的人都知道，嬰兒用品必須定時清潔，以免孳生病菌，造成小孩感染生病，但最近美國的研究發現，即使是像托嬰中心一樣頻繁打掃的場所，仍可在家具及玩具表面發現殘留的肺炎及化膿性鏈球菌，這些菌種對嬰幼兒的健康可能產生危害。
肺炎鏈球菌能引起一些很嚴重的感染性疾病，主要侵襲耳朵及呼吸道，能引發兒童中耳炎、敗血症、菌血症、肺炎及腦膜炎，世界上每年約有 100 萬 5 歲以下的兒童死於肺炎鏈球菌感染。化膿性鏈球菌感染則會造成喉嚨和扁桃腺腫痛的鏈球菌性喉炎，以及猩紅熱、急性腎絲球發炎、丹毒、蜂窩性組織炎、壞死性肌膜炎等疾病。
過去認為，鏈球菌無法長時間在體外存活，且在人類體內的繁殖力及感染力較強，因此醫師都建議家中有嬰幼兒的民眾，必須時常清潔周遭環境避免感染。但美國紐約州立大學水牛城分校研究團隊卻發現，鏈球菌不但能在環境中存活數月，且仍具有感染能力。
研究人員在一家前晚已做過內部清潔的托嬰中心進行抽驗，結果發現有 8 成的填充玩具表面，都驗出肺炎鏈球菌，而嬰兒床表面則是全數驗出化膿性鏈球菌，當拿到實驗室檢驗，這些菌株都能造成實驗鼠感染，顯示這些「殘菌」仍然具備繁殖及感染力。
雖然鏈球菌透過肢體接觸，會造成多少嬰幼兒感染仍有待商榷，然而一旦證實感染力不遜於飛沫傳染，則相關防疫措施就有必要進一步修正。此研究已發表在《感染與免疫》。
