一項發表在 Nature 期刊的報告，指出當 HIV 病毒進入到人體，能在非常短的時間於體內形成堅不可摧的屏障，這項發現讓科學家冀望早期治療能治癒病毒的夢想破滅。
美國哈佛大學研究人員讓一群猴子感染猴愛滋病毒（SIV），接著在不同時間給予抗逆轉錄病毒藥物，最快三天內就開始用藥，最慢則遲至兩週才治療，半年後停止治療，結果無論多早開始服用抗逆轉錄病毒藥物，猴子體內仍發現病毒的蹤影，表明只要一經感染，「病毒儲存庫」（viral reservoirs）在極短時間內就形成。
哈佛大學醫學院教授巴路克（Dan Barouch）表示，根據動物實驗所得到的數據，病毒儲存庫的形成比以往所認知的時間還要早上許多。他們發現感染後的最初幾天，雖然血液中檢測不出病毒，但組織內已有病毒存在。
這項結果也許能說明之前的新聞，美國一名出生不久即接受積極藥物治療的「密西西比愛滋寶寶」，曾被認為已治癒，如今卻再次測出愛滋病毒。這是醫界對抗愛滋病的重大挫折，顯示愛滋病毒難以擊敗，治癒愛滋病的目標仍很遙遠。
雖然早期治療可能無法治癒 HIV 感染，但過去的研究皆指出能降低「病毒儲存庫」的大小。研究人員特別指出這項動物實驗結果無法完全類比到人類身上，但卻提醒在早期治療之外，還必須開發出新的治療方法來消滅病毒。
