疾病管制署公布新竹縣今（2014）年首例日本腦炎病例，42歲女性，7月16日起出現發燒、頭痛等症狀而就醫，目前住院治療中，同住家人無疑似症狀。截至8月5日，全國累計13例病例，為彰化縣4例，嘉義市、臺南市及高雄市各2例，新竹縣、臺中市及屏東縣各1例。
新竹首例個案近期無出國史，距離住家約100公尺附近有水稻田及池塘。當地衛生局已進行個案居住與活動地之環境調查及掛燈誘捕病媒蚊等防治工作，並加強當地民眾防蚊滅蚊宣導及適齡兒童疫苗催種工作。
疾管署表示，日本腦炎病媒蚊主要為三斑家蚊與環紋家蚊孳生於水稻田、池塘及灌溉溝渠等處，吸血高峰為黃昏與黎明時段，而豬為病毒的主要宿主，請民眾儘量避免於病媒蚊吸血高峰時段，在豬舍、其他動物畜舍或病媒蚊孳生地點等高風險環境附近活動；如果無法避免，應穿著淺色長袖衣褲，並於身體裸露處使用衛生福利部核可的防蚊藥劑，避免病媒蚊叮咬而感染。
