男性同胞們，如果你還想生小孩，還是立刻戒菸吧。一項研究顯示父親在 15 歲之前就開始吸菸或菸齡愈長，之後生下的小孩得到非過敏性氣喘的機率就愈高，但相同情形下母親卻不會有影響。
這項研究的目的在於探討父母親在母親受孕前吸菸對孩子出生後是否有氣喘的關連。研究透過 13,000 份問卷，瞭解父親與母親在受孕前吸菸有多久時間，受孕前是否有戒菸，以及小孩是否有氣喘等。
研究發現父親在懷孕前若有吸菸，孩子得到非過敏性氣喘的機率有顯著提高；父親如果在 15 歲前就吸菸，或是菸齡愈長，孩子就愈會有氣喘。研究中並沒有發現母親在懷孕前吸菸對孩子氣喘的影響。研究發表在日前的歐洲呼吸醫學會 2014 年國際會議 (European Respiratory Society International Congress) 中。
根據美國氣喘與過敏基金會的說明，非過敏性氣喘與一般的過敏引發氣喘症狀相同，但造成的原因不同，包括焦慮、壓力、運動、過度換氣、乾或冷的空氣、吸菸、病毒或其他刺激造成。
研究執筆人挪威卑爾根大學國際公共衛生中心教授 Cecilie Svanes 表示，這是第一份有關父親在孩子受孕前的吸菸習慣如何影響孩子出生後呼吸道疾病的研究。根據這項研究，也可以假設任何類型的空氣污染包括職場的污染或化學物質暴露，都會造成類似的結果。對於決策者來說，警告年輕男性吸菸對他們將來出生的孩子造成的危害，也是相當重要的事。
