許多醫學系、護理系學生抱著滿腔熱血想濟世救人，實習的時候，卻往往遇上一個小小的障礙，那就是堆積如山的抽血、打針工作，這時，手藝好不好決定了自己的尊嚴與病人的福祉，要是一針就上，病人會投以感激的眼光，而家屬更是無言的讚賞；要是手忙腳亂，怎麼打怎麼不上，病人手臂給插成了劍山，真是苦痛的折磨，臉上也充滿對你「專業能力」的懷疑，而家屬更是彷彿隨時打算要上法院控告你虐待病人……。
但血管真的不是那麼好找，江湖傳說，血管「看得見的就打不到」，這是因為淺層的血管容易滑動，一針下去很容易滑開而失手，但深層的血管則無法看見，只能以觸摸憑感覺衡量位置所在，而當遇上老年病人，或是住院日久血管萎縮的病人，更是看不見也摸不著，只能憑長年的經驗「神乎其技」來把針打好了。
澳洲紅十字會決定以科技來解決這個長久以來的困擾，利用的是近紅外線，近紅外線穿透皮膚與組織的能力比可見光好，而靜脈中的血紅素處於脫氧狀態，很容易吸收近紅外線，於是就能跟周圍明顯的區分出來，唯一的問題是：人眼看不見近紅外線。
這問題很容易解決，雖然人眼看不到，但機器看得到，機器拍攝近紅外線影像後，再以人眼看得見的可見光，譬如說綠色光，即時投影在手臂上，那血管在哪就一目瞭然，再也不用怕看不見摸不著只能盲打了。
澳洲紅十字會為何要發展這套科技？原來是許多捐血者，怕不能「一針見血」，得挨好幾針，於是對捐血就打了退堂鼓，澳洲紅十字會心想要是能改善「中針率」，應該能大為鼓勵捐血善行，澳洲紅十字會在雪梨找來 900 名志願捐血者來測試這項新科技，其中有 300 位是第一次捐血，600 位曾經捐過血，以此實地測試，來評估這項新科技的效果，志願者抽血時是否更無痛、日後更願意捐血，以及這樣做的成本是多少。
就讓澳洲人先當白老鼠測試看看囉，不過，如果真的如理論般有效，相信國內所有需要打針抽血的病人，都一定會希望快快引進這項科技。
