如果這個法案成功推行，對於歐洲畜牧業可能會有顯著的影響，因為許多歐洲消費者不見得願意吃以基改作物餵養的動物肉品。同時這個政策也可能影響美國的飼料進口，以往歐洲大部分以大豆為基礎的飼料都是從美國與南美進口，以德國馬首是瞻的歐盟也很有可能跟上同樣的政策，可能會因此引起美國與歐盟之間的貿易紛爭。
雖然梅克爾成功連任德國總理，但她所屬的德國基督教民主聯盟則未能獲得議會多數席位，使得梅克爾需要跟反對黨協商組成聯合政府，讓兩黨瓜分內閣職位以獲得支持。
目前德國兩黨都尚未決定是否要延續德國的限制基改作物政策，但德國已經開始敦促歐盟阻止農民種植基改作物，就連原本已經同意在歐盟嚴苛法規下的農民也一樣。
德國前農業部長伊爾莎曾經表達對於基改作物的強力反對，不過在9月德國大選後她已經離開中央政府。
這個新生的德國聯合政府將會開始專注農場的動物福利，包括抗生素的限制、禁止複製動物與複製動物肉進口、歐盟國非基改的植物種子不再受到專利法限制（註）。
註：即使非基改食物也可能會有品種的專利問題，例如米可能會有不同品種以及各種種植問題等，都有可能成為專利，事實上在歐洲已經有一些作物公司為此開始興起訴訟。
美國甫通過孟山都法案，讓基改食品於美國不需要標示即可上市，而歐盟不但反其道而行，還可能在德國推動之下完全禁絕基改作物。
根據聯合國統計，目前全世界人口約70億，其中就有有9.25億飢餓人口，基改食物最早出現的目的，是為了解決全世界可能會來臨的糧食危機，如果全面禁止基改作後，光靠傳統農業改良是否能維持穩定的食物產量還有得觀察。
