大家都知道錢很髒，但到底有多髒？上面到底有多少種細菌？細菌是從哪裡來？美國研究人員在曼哈頓銀行的紙鈔上，發現有 3,000 多種的細菌，大多數的細菌與人類皮膚上的細菌一樣，但有少部分的細菌與口腔中的類似，甚至還有細菌是孳生在陰道中的。
紐約大學基因組與系統生物學表示，雖然大多數在紙鈔上發現的細菌很溫和，如痤瘡，但有些細菌屬於超級細菌，例如超級金黃色葡萄球菌（MRSA），MRSA 能抵抗所有青黴素，包括最後一道防線萬古黴素。
研究人員指出，紙鈔可能成為人與人之間病菌感染的媒介，舉例來說，冬天時鈔票更容易攜帶引起肺炎的病菌，但研究人員強調，雖然在鈔票上發現的某些細菌令人擔憂，但不代表民眾應過分恐慌，只要平時多注意個人衛生習慣，即可有效預防。
