幹細胞再生醫學的研究領域中，最麻煩的一件事就是取得足夠可用的幹細胞，又不能被罵沒天良（胚胎幹細胞）。不過科學家於日前發現人體內有一個地方的神經細胞會自動轉化回幹細胞：牙齒！這對學界獲得更多幹細胞以治病或醫療，是一大好消息。
這項刊登在自然雜誌的研究，研究者發現在牙髓裡面有一小群間質幹細胞存在，一般來說它的作用是生成牙齒、骨骼與軟骨。研究團隊瑞典卡羅琳醫學院的生物學家 Igor Adameyko 表示，如果他能夠掌握這種幹細胞的發展過程，他也許就可以在實驗室裡重製整個過程，就可以為再生醫學界創造出一個新的產生幹細胞途徑。
他與團隊成員在研究小鼠神經膠質細胞時，就發現隨著時間進展，一些神經膠質細胞會離開原本所在的牙齦往牙齒內部移動，然後就會轉化成間質幹細胞。
Adameyko 表示，過往學界一般的認知是神經系統的細胞不會從體細胞轉化回幹細胞狀態，而他們的發現改變了這項認知，如果科學家能找到促使神經膠質細胞轉化的關鍵，就可以在實驗室生產幹細胞。沒有參與實驗的加州大學舊金山分校生物學家 Ophir Klein 則說，研究結果令人振奮，不過還是希望能用其他技術以確認間質幹細胞生成的原因，較為妥當。
