氣喘體質是會遺傳的，與皮膚炎，過敏性鼻炎常一齊出現。雙親中若有一人患病則約有30%的孩子會受影響，若皆有氣喘則50%孩子會有此體質。80%的病人第一次發作在五歲前，一半在青少年時會緩解，但是不少人成年以後又復發，較嚴重需長期服藥控制的病患，大約百分之九十終其一生有氣喘的問題。一般認為家庭經濟差，母親產子時年齡太小，早產，兄弟眾多，較常發生呼吸感染因而誘發氣喘，但是最近也有報告指出高學歷的父母因為較注重清潔，使孩子太少暴露於環境物質導致免疫失調也容易導致氣喘。
氣喘分成兩種，外因性的常因吸入或吃進某些物質導致發作，如蟑螂，狗毛，貓毛，花粉，黴菌，二手煙，阿斯匹靈，冷空氣，甚至香水也會，現在公共場所禁煙是很好的措施，以前常遇到孩子因外出吸入二手煙而誘發氣喘，現在已經少見，油漆的溶劑也可能造成氣喘發作，剛粉刷過的房間先不要讓孩子進入。
內因性的常找不到明顯的誘發物質，在小於兩歲或老年人常為內因性之氣喘，他們肺部的過敏免疫球蛋白並不高。造成感冒的呼吸道融合病毒及副流感病毒易誘發氣喘，病毒可能刺激副交感神經造成氣管收縮，呼吸道融合病毒主要發生在6個月之內的小嬰兒，常在冬天流行，造成嚴重流鼻水，呼吸急促，鼻病毒，流感病毒及腺病毒，披衣菌或細菌感染也可能誘發較大孩子的氣喘。另外在月經期間及甲狀腺功能亢進也可能造成氣喘惡化，劇烈運動及情緒緊張也會導致發作。因外來的過敏物質導致支氣管的肌肉收縮常在幾分鐘內迅速惡化，若是由病毒所引起，則在幾天中症狀慢慢加劇。
