目前全球每年在37周前出生的早產兒約有1500萬名，總共耗費約10%的資療資源，但每年還是會有100萬早產兒夭折。而活下來的1400萬名早產兒中，有4.4%左右會有輕度障礙，而3%以下會有中度以及重度障礙。
倫敦衛生與熱帶醫學院的 Prof Lawn 教授說：「目前對於早產兒處理的傳統方式仍然是以重症監護的方式進行，但有 85%的早產兒是在預產期之前6周出生，他們需要幫忙哺乳、穩定體溫，而且他們更容易受到感染。」
他進一步表示，讓寶寶與母親肌膚接觸的袋鼠式護理可以同時達到這個效果，包括穩定體溫、哺乳同時也可以減少感染；只有在32週之前的早產兒不適合使用「袋鼠式護理」，因為他們的肺部尚未成熟需要呼吸器輔助。
聯合國秘書長潘基文一直都不遺餘力地推動婦女與兒童的醫療運動，他在上周五表示，全球每年死亡的100萬新生兒中，有四分之三可以藉由更便宜、更有效的保護措施降低死亡率，而不需要使用較為昂貴的重症監護模式。
早產男嬰與女嬰的風險比較
此項新生兒研究將刊登在《兒童科學研究期刊 The Pediatric Research Journal》，該研究也顯示目前有14%的新生兒早產，而早產男嬰罹患殘疾與死亡的比例高於早產女嬰。 研究顯示，當婦女懷男胎的時候更容易有高血壓、妊娠毒血症等問題，可能與部分的早產男嬰有關，而男嬰也比較有可能有黃疸與感染等分娩併發症的問題，但男嬰早產較女嬰早產更危險。
即使是在子宮內，女嬰的成熟速度也比男嬰快，這是女嬰天生的優勢，也讓她們的肺部器官比男嬰更為發達。
