跌倒是老人家的頭號殺手。根據衛福部資料顯示，跌倒為台灣老人發生事故的第二大原因，且年紀越大、跌倒的發生率越高。普渡大學（Purdue University）研發出一款防止跌倒的智慧型裝置，能計算使用者的步伐、速度，準確率高達 95%，並統計出什麼樣的走路型態容易跌倒。
這款裝置稱為「智慧型步態儀」（SmartGait），戴在腰部上，可與不同的智慧型手機結合，手機上安裝一個俯視廣角鏡頭，能回傳影片至手機 App 中，測量使用者的步伐長度、步伐寬度與行走速度，是第一款能用來測量走路型態的儀器。為了瞭解這款步態儀的準確性，研究人員將它與感應器和紅外線感測器的結果比較，結果步伐長度準確率達 95%，步伐寬度準確率為 90%。
研究團隊還發現步伐越慢，跨距不規則，跌倒的機率增加。普渡大學電子和計算機工程學系教授齊伊（Babak Ziaie）表示，他開發這個專案的念頭來自祖父因跌倒傷了臀部、不久之後過世的意外而起的，研究團隊相信這款裝置能減少跌倒的發生率，不僅適用於老年人，也適用疾病引起的平衡感不佳問題，如巴金森氏症（Parkinson’s disease）。
齊伊指出，這款步態儀以簡易的方式、便宜價錢取代需要花費數萬美元的監測儀，且準確率幾乎一樣，未來若繼續開發，可將技術延伸至跌倒監測器，當發現步伐不穩、跨距不規則時，能適時提出警告，防止跌倒發生，將疼痛降到最低，最重要的是減少致殘率與死亡率。
